Sound explorer. Master of Arts. Music Supervisor.
My name is Leo Niemi - an independent Music Supervisor based in Helsinki, Finland.
Why is music? This incomplete sentence could start an abstract musicological essay which is something I’ve written in my days.
The mystery of music has led me through music schools, universities, theaters, rap albums and choir camps. It is also what drives me in my Music Supervision career: what can you make with music?
Music carries endless amounts of cultural connotations, psychological capabilities and personal opinions. I help people in film and advertising make meaningful and well-grounded decisions about music.
What does a Music Supervisor do?
Music Supervisor’s responsibilities include:
Communicating with film production staff on everything music related.
Collaborating with composers, producers, publishers, labels and rightsholders.
Music budgeting.
Clearing music rights, negotiating fees and suggesting optional music.
Creative producer for bespoke music.
A Music Supervisor is responsible for selecting and licensing the music used in films, TV programmes, advertising, video games and other media. Our job is to find the perfect songs or compositions to match the mood, tone and narrative of a scene or project. We work closely with directors, producers and composers to ensure that the music enhances the story and engages the audience.
In addition to music selection, Music Supervisors handle the complex legal and financial aspects of acquiring rights to songs, working with artists, record labels and publishers. We have a deep understanding of music history, trends and genres, and use this knowledge to create memorable and compelling soundtracks that enhance the overall project experience.
